A message from the new President appears below:

Dear FCCA members,

At our recent AGM, I was privileged to be elected as the new President of the FCCA. Having served as Vice-President over a number of years, I am looking forward to drawing on that experience and working with the new executive to lead the organization over the next 12 months. I am getting in touch to introduce myself to the wider membership and to thank Dov Kornits for his efforts as retiring President. Very briefly by way of introduction, I have a background in teaching and writing on film in the tertiary sector, have recently have moved into teaching in the social sciences area and review regularly on Melbourne radio.

Amongst other achievements during his tenure, Dov worked hard at establishing a working relationship with the Australian Film Critics Association in Melbourne. The two organizations have many shared aims and objectives and as a Melbourne-based critic, I believe I am well placed to facilitate a constructive and ongoing dialogue with AFCA.

In addition to facilitating discussions with the AFCA, there are a number of other issues that I am keen for the organization to address in the next 12 months. These include clarification of FCCA membership pass agreements with all exhibitiors, upgrading our website, increasing our presence at film festivals and other events and surveying the membership regularly and responding to issues and needs as identified. Given the rapidly changing landscape for film writing and reviewing, reappraising our membership criteria has been on the organization’s agenda for some time and is an issue that I believe is crucial that we tackle in the next 12 months. The new executive also welcomes feedback or suggestions from members about current issues or ways in which the organization can better represent the membership.

I am looking forward to working closely with Vice-President Paolo Remati, and general executive members Nick Matteo, Sue Williams, Jane Freebury and Russell Edwards. I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding, ongoing contribution of our administrator and awards co-ordinator Adrienne McKibbins, without whom the FCCA simply would not keep functioning.

This year we are looking to getting reviews or articles of all Australian films that will be in our Awards on the website. You can write a review of any film and submit it (the current executive will make decisions on publication); or supply us with a link to your review.

Also, as there are so many individual festivals, French, Korean, Japanese, Jewish, Russian, Indian, etc.,  if you attend any of these festivals or would like to write on the films in these festivals, please consider submitting something.

Don’t forget to keep up with Australian films through the year. A list of the films released so far this year can be found here.

And a reminder to all members – please advise Adrienne of any changes to your contact email, postal address, work, etc, as soon as possible.

facebookAs many of you may or may not be aware, the FCCA is working on expanding its presence on social media. Twitter is well and truly established but Facebook is taking a bit longer to get a presence.

If we could please get as many members of the FCCA to join the Facebook page that would be great. The link is here:

The key to growth on Facebook is to create a community. A way of doing that is to have reviews and news shared from all of the organisation’s members. For example, if a member has a link to a review that they would like to share, by all means message the Facebook page and it shall be posted!

Thanks to all. See you on Facebook.
